Keep writing everyday – Reetu Karmakar
INTERVIEW WITH REETU KARMAKAR
CONTRIBUTING POET OJ JEREMIAD OF HEARTS
A short and sweet introduction of yourself. *
I’m a very down to earth, 25 year old woman, an engineer by profession and a writer by passion.
When did you first start writing? *
I don’t really think, any writer will be able to answer this quite aptly. I’ve been writing since I learnt to frame my thoughts into proper sentences. However, it usually comprised short stories or proses, and poetries were occasional. However, recently I’ve been into a lot more of poetry writing.
Do you remember what you wrote first? *
How did you get interested in writing? *
Belonging to a Bengali family, my childhood revolved around the stories of Sharatchandra Chattopadhya and Rabindranath Tagore, so when I picked up the pen, it wasn’t so hard for me to write on my own, the words kept flowing and before I was aware, I was already writing stories in the literature examinations too, unable to resist, often breaking away the word limit..
Who or what has been inspiration? *
My mother has been my inspiration, I often write about her as the heroine of my write-ups.
Who are your favorite authors/poets? Why? *
I’m madly in love with Arthur Conan Doyle and J.K. Rowling and then there’s Margaret Atwood, and of course Sharatchandra Chattopadhya, Sidney Sheldon and obviously, Khaled Hosseini and for poems, I’m in love with Robert Frost and Rabindranath Tagore.
How do you feel when you write? *
I’ve been fighting depression since a year, and there has hardly been any therapy that has worked for me during the time when I’m under an attack, other than writing. Whenever I am writing, I feel it is untangling the knots in my mind, and helps me to let go of the negativity and it sets me free. I can hardly talk about my emotions, but I can pen them down with ease and that makes me feel content.
What are your other hobbies? *
I love to read a lot and sing too.
How did you feel when you got your selection mail? *
I was elated when I got the selection mail..
What do you think about poetry? *
I like to think of poetry as something and anything that can be sung with the beats of a background music, this song can be something really happy or hurtful or it can also be something really funny instead. Sometimes, it is like a nonexistent home I keep going back to, a hiraeth, and at other times, it is like the happy song, I sing to myself to remind myself of all the good things in my life.
Do you think rhymes are important for poems? Why so? *
Yes, in my opinion, rhymes are important to some extent, as I said, I like to think of poetry as a song that I can sing to a beating background music, and rhymes make the song even more beautiful.
A few words for your readers? *
Hope you like reading it as much as I loved writing it.
What do you wish to say to budding writers? *
Keep writing everyday, and the words will never stop flowing.
